Our Spring Concert will be on Thursday 27th March 2025, at 7pm, at St Giles Cripplegate, Barbican.
We are honoured and moved to be performing the world premiere of a new work for orchestra and choir by Jacques Cohen, Lancastria.
The work includes a setting of the Tennyson poem Crossing the Bar, and commemorates the 85th anniversary of the sinking of HMT Lancastria by enemy action, with huge loss of life. Despite the scale of the tragedy - the loss of life was at least equal to the combined losses of the ‘Lusitania’ and ‘Titanic’ disasters - it is not as widely remembered as it should be, due to an initial reporting ban.
The concert programme will contain more details, including of Lloyd's Choir's role in commemmorating this awful event, through our links with St Katharine Cree which holds an annual memorial service for the victims.
In the meantime, you can listen to this 30 minuted podcast recorded in 2010 for more information: https://media.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php/forgotten-tragedy-the-loss-of-hmt-lancastria/
You can buy tickets for the concert in advance from https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/lloyds-choir/t-noryvep (booking fee applies) and from choir members.
